While we don’t get a lot of really hot summer days in the Pacific Northwest, but when we do, you want to find someplace cool and wet…stat. While water parks are fun, they can get expensive and on those really hot days, you’ll be standing in the hot sun more often than you will be cooling off in the water. Here are our recommendations for bringing quick, cool relief in the greater Kirkland and Bothell area for free or almost free:

Crossroads Park
999 164th Ave. N.E.
Bellevue, Wa  98008
http://www/parks.bellevuewa.gov/parks-and-trails/parks/crossroads-park
This “spray park” is a playground and splash area all in one. It has an aquatic theme with large orcas, sea anemones and frogs to climb on and get splashed from. Each section is padded for safety and the lack of blacktop in the splash areas means no burned feet!

Grass Lawn Park
7031 148 Ave. N.E.
Redmond, Wa 98052
http://www.ci.redmond.wa.us/cms/one.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=4010

Although it probably took the parks department about 45 seconds to come up with the name, Grass Lawn Park features a large playground and even better splash area for kids for young ones. The Splash Pad features motion activated sensors that we spray the bigger kids when the try to sprint past.

Redmond Town Center
7525 166th Ave. N.E.

Have a little shopping to do but the kids are whining that they want to go to the park? Do two things at  once at the Redmond Town Center mall. Smack dab in the middle of the outdoor plaza you’ll find a “hopping fountain” with chlorinated water for the kids to splash around in. Although the space isn’t huge, it will do in a pinch and keep the little one cool and contented.

Willis Tucker Park
6705 Puget Park Dr.
Snohomish, Wa  98296
http:www.snohomishcountywa.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Spray-Pad-40

A little ways up north, Willis Tucker Park is a destination place for the kids with a large splash pad with water domes, aqua jumpers, a power volcano and the silverflow cannon. However, it good to know that the water shuts down from 2:30-3:30 p.m. for maintenance.

Chism Beach Park
9600 S.E. 11th St.
Bellevue, Wa 98004
http://www.parks.bellevuewa.gov/parks-and-trails/parks/chism-beach-park

Chism Beach Park is the largest on the waterfront in Bellevue with its own family beach area. The floating dock makes for a fun destination for older kids (and adults) away from the splashing toddlers. You’ll also find a wading area, a small playground and plenty of sand to spread out a blank on and/or make sandcastles.

Houghton Beach ParkImage title
5811 Lake Washington Blvd.
Kirkland, Wa 98033
http://www.kirklandwa.gov/depart/parks/Recreation_and_Services/Aquatics/Kirkland_Beaches.htm?

This isn’t just a great park for families, but also for those working in Downtown Kirkland wanting a little respite from the work day. It has beautiful views of Seattle and Olympics and kids will be entertained on the playground or playing in the water.

Waverly Beach Park
633 Waverly Way

While not the biggest park, it is often less “busy” than the others with a u-shaped dock and swimming area and lots of shade near the shore. Lifeguards too!

Juanita Beach Park
9703 N.E. Juanita Drive
Kirkland, Wa 98034
http://www.kirklandwa.gov/depart/parks/Recreation_and_Services/Aquatics/Kirkland_Beaches.htm?

This park received a bit of a makeover a few years ago and still looks fresh. It has an enclosed swimming area, lifeguards and nice walking paths, landscaping and even some public art. It’s also huge.
